In Loving Memory of Marylou Roche

Marylou Roche—known lovingly as Mom, Marylou, M.L., Lala, Gum, and Gamoo—had a special gift for creating beauty. Whether arranging wildflowers gathered along a country roadside, welcoming friends into a thoughtfully decorated home, or quietly watching the birds from her favorite chair by the fireplace, she found great joy in life's everyday details.

She passed away just shy of her 82nd birthday, surrounded by the love of her family and close friends, after an arduous battle with cancer. She faced her illness with extraordinary determination, meeting every challenge with resilience and the quiet strength that defined her life.

Born in Milton, Massachusetts, and raised on Geneva Road in Melrose, Marylou was the oldest of the five Sullivan children. She was a New Englander through and through, deeply proud of the history and charm of Boston and Cape Cod. Although she and her husband, Phil, cherished travels to France, Italy, Greece, and other parts of Europe, her favorite place was always home.

And what beautiful homes she created.

Throughout her life in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Florida, and Cape Cod, Marylou had an extraordinary gift for transforming a house into a warm, elegant sanctuary. She delighted in choosing colors, fabrics, antiques, flowers, and artwork, tending gardens, arranging porches, and creating spaces where family and friends instantly felt welcomed. She also treasured life's simple gifts: the sound of rain on the roof at night, the sight of a full moon rising over the ocean, and the birds that gathered daily at her many feeders.

Her talent for floral arranging was especially admired. Ordinary branches, wildflowers, and even the "weeds" she and her children collected became beautiful works of art. Along the way, she taught them the names of native plants and to notice lovely details others might overlook. Later, she shared that passion by teaching popular adult education classes in floral arranging.

Marylou loved to read, especially the historical fiction novels of James Michener, whose sagas fed her lifelong curiosity about history and other cultures. She was always striving to grow as a person, learning from life's lessons and deepening her faith along the journey.

She was also known for her impeccable style. Always beautifully dressed, with her hair, jewelry, and accessories perfectly coordinated, elegance came naturally to her. Friends and family smiled at her confidence and flair. Some affectionately described her as a bit of a diva—a title she likely would have accepted with a knowing smile.

She loved entertaining and had a gift for making every guest feel genuinely welcomed. Long before anyone arrived, every detail had been thoughtfully considered.

Although she treasured time with family and friends, Marylou often remarked that she was "never lonely and never bored." She found contentment in her own company and always discovered something meaningful to do.

Later in life, she surprised herself by becoming a skilled golfer, even achieving the unforgettable thrill of a hole in one—a story she loved to tell. Throughout her life, she remained devoted to her Catholic faith and found lasting comfort and strength in its traditions.

She adored her miniature schnauzers—Heidi, Onyx, Baggins, and, most recently, little Lucie—each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Marylou graduated from the Forsyth School of Dental Hygiene in Boston and began her career as a dental assistant in Melrose. She later worked in Title I education in North Andover and as a service representative with Liberty Mutual. She also volunteered as Chair of the Women's Board house tours in Middletown, Connecticut, helping to raise thousands of dollars for women in need.

Above all, Marylou loved her family. She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 62 years, Phil, who was not only her husband but her closest friend and steadfast partner through every season of life. Together they cared for one another with unwavering loyalty and deep affection. She is also survived by her daughter, Michelle Roche; her son, Jeff Roche; her grandchildren, Ian Sukle, Justin Roche, Tyler Roche, and Jake Roche; and her four siblings; Kathy Marshall, Paula Sullivan, Gail Escot and Ted Sullivan.

A Funeral Mass celebrating Marylou's life will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in West Harwich on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, at 10:30 a.m.

Those who knew Marylou will remember fresh flowers on the table, candles glowing in the evening, birds gathered at the feeders outside her window, and a home that always felt warm and welcoming. She had a way of noticing beauty where others might not, and in doing so, taught those she loved to notice it too.
