Gary R. Sanford passed away on Thursday July 23, 2026 after a lengthy illness, at the age of 83. Gary was born on January 27, 1943, to Elwood and Edith Sanford, the youngest of three brothers. Raised on a Chicken Ranch in Sabastopol, California, "Skip" as he was then called, had a happy childhood with his elder brothers, Elwood II and Steve. Gary played Saxophone and together with his father, bought and learned to play the Marimba.

Exhibiting talent in both the Arts and Sciences, Gary ultimately chose the Sciences and graduated from UC Berkley with an emphasis on Botany. He continued his studies, receiving a PhD at UC Davis. It was there that he met his first wife, Jean Collins with whom he had a son, Jason S. Sanford.

After finishing his PhD, Gary accepted a teaching position at Wellsley College, in Wellsley, MA., and the young family moved eastward. At Wellsley, Gary taught courses on Ecology and lead students on field trips where they learned to collect, cook, and eat edible seaweed. He also worked alongside the greenhouse staff to developthe still extant "Fern Room" at the Wellsley College Greenhouse.

His first marriage didn't last, but he remained steadfastly committed to fatherhood. His son fondly remembers his father's renaissance as a 'Single Guy' in the 1970's, a period which saw him exploring new interests such as photography, wine-tasting and tennis.

He had a brief second marriage to Kathy Whittemore, during which time he lived together in Acton, MA., with her and her two children, Lisa and David.

After some years at Wellsley College, he decided to move on from academia to the private sector. He worked for a time for the EG&G Company before striking out on his own to found Sanford Ecological Services in the early 1980's. He would find success as a small business entrepreneur, working closely with many local Conservation Commisions within the State of Massachusetts, frequently on issues related to Wetland Conservation. It was in this context that he met his future wife and life partner, AnnMarie Griffin, also a Biologist and nature lover.

Gary and AnnMarie were married in 1990 and enjoyed many years as devoted spouses.
They enjoyed traveling, nature walks and shared their lives with a number of well-loved dogs and cats. They lived in Southborrough, MA., Upon Gary's retirement they moved to Cape Cod. They left for a while for Machias, Maine., but loved the Cape too much and returned to settle in West Yarmouth, MA. 

In his retirement years, Gary kept busy. He self-published a number of books  including, "The Ecology of Common Woody Plants of Cape Cod", "Plant Ecology-Interior Cape Cod", and "Plants and Habitats:Exploratory Inspection Techniques:, titles which are still available via Amozon.com print-on-demand service. He enjoyed doing research for these volumes by taking nature walks around the Cape.
