Leonard Dean McMillin, 74, passed away on September 1, 2026, with his loving family by his side. A man whose life was defined by service, devotion, and quiet strength, Dean was born in Columbus, Ohio, to Leonard and Freda McMillin on August 30, 1952. From his earliest years to his final days, he carried a steady kindness, a deep loyalty to those he loved, and a spirit that made every room feel a little lighter.

Following his graduation from high school, he proudly answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Marine Corps. He served from 1971 to 1975, attaining the rank of Sergeant and working as a helicopter mechanic. During his service, he also participated as a crew member in direct aerial combat flights, earning the Air Combat Insignia. His military honors and recognitions include the Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Meritorious Mast. A skilled marksman, he qualified as a pistol sharpshooter and rifle expert. His years as a Marine reflected courage, dedication, and a commitment to service that remained an important part of his life and legacy.

After his military service, Dean and his wife made their way from California to Massachusetts in 1978. Dean established a successful career as a marketing manager, a role he held for 20 years and one that took him on travels to places like Mexico and Hawaii. He later transitioned into real estate, becoming the president of Nice Place Properties and working alongside his son Michael and daughter Laurie before continuing his career with Keller Williams Real Estate.

Dean’s life was not defined solely by his work. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He was a scout leader and great mentor for the youth. He also volunteered countless hours at local Rod and Gun clubs that he enjoyed. He was charitable with his time and efforts to foster in more love and respect for all things, forest and ocean.

After moving to Cape Cod in 2014, he was especially happy to have fresh clams to fish for his infamous chowder and stuffies. Dean was the family chef for more than 40 years, feeding the people he loved. In addition to his famous chowder, baby back ribs were his other specialty, although his attempts to master biscuits remained a work in progress. Dean’s deer jerky didn’t last long once ready, as it was quickly gobbled up. Those who knew Dean knew that good food, good company, and plenty of laughter were never far away.

Some of his happiest memories were made outdoors. For many years, Dean and his family camped with their friends Jeanne and George and their children, spending evenings around the campfire telling stories and simply enjoying one another’s company. He also loved playing games, especially Mexican Train, and of course poker nights with the guys, where garlic and anchovy pizza was part of the tradition.

From a husband and Marine to a hardworking professional, father, brother, friend, outdoorsman, and chef, Dean built a life filled with experiences, traditions, and memories that will live on through those who loved him.

Dean’s story is one of devotion—to his country, to his work, to the outdoors, and most of all to his family. He lived with purpose, humor, and a generosity that fed both stomachs and souls. The memories he created, the traditions he tended, and the love he gave so freely will continue to echo into the lives of those who knew him.

Though he has left this world, the warmth of his presence remains—in every shared meal, every campfire story, every game played around a table, and every moment of laughter he sparked. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, who will carry his strength, his stories, and his love forward.

Dean is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sandra (Faust) McMillin; sons Matthew of Nashua, NH, and Michael of W. Warwick, RI; sister Debbie (McMillin) McWilliams and her husband Bill McWilliams of E. Liverpool, OH; brother-in-law Stephen Faust and his wife Linda (Porter) Faust of Pepperell, MA; brother-in-law Gary Faust and his wife Leslie Greene Faust of Marina Del Rey, CA; and granddaughters Sarah and Kristen McDonagh of Attleboro, MA, and Serene McMillin of Nashua, NH.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Laurie (McMillin) McDonagh; his parents, Leonard and Freda McMillin; his sister, Gail (McMillin) Addington; and his beloved beagle, Molly.

Visiting hours will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave, South Yarmouth. Burial will be held at the Massachusetts National Cemetery on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 11:30 a.m.
