Bernard C. Chase, Jr. 94 of South Yarmouth died Friday July 14, 2017 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis.

He was the husband of the late Doris C. Chase, who died in 1989. They had been married for 41 years.

Born in Brighton, Bernard was raised in Newton, the son of the late Bernard C. and Glenna (MacGregor) Chase.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, serving 56 months overseas in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945.

Bernard joined the Boston Police Department in 1948 and served for 32 years before his retirement in 1980.

He bought his first home in West Roxbury in the 1950’s and lived there until moving to South Yarmouth in 1971.

An avid golfer, Bernard was a member of the Bass River and Bayberry Golf Courses. He played with the Forty Theives, the Two Bitters, and the Sixties until 2001.

Later in life, Bernard served as National Adjutant of the Americal Division, serving World War II, Korean War, and Vietnam veterans.

Bernard is survived by a daughter, who lovingly served as his caregiver for 16 years, Jacqueline Putnam Gonsalves and her husband, Stanley of South Yarmouth; a son, Paul R. Chase of South Yarmouth; two grandchildren, Keith P. Putnam and Kelly N. Putnam; and five great grandchildren, Colby T., Brianna, and Sophia Putnam, Caleb Putnam Gonsalves and Cameron Putnam Gonsalves.

The family would like to extend there thanks and gratitude to the VA nurses, Bob and Rosie for the loving care they gave our Dad.

Visiting hours will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. with a prayer service held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday July 19 in the Hallett Funeral Home, 273 Station Ave., South Yarmouth.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday July 20 in the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.

The procession to the cemetery will form at 9:30 a.m. from the funeral home.
