Stephen "Steve" L. Gavin, 82, of Yarmouth Port passed away on April 2,2021.  Born April 14, 1938 in New York City, he was the son of the late Christopher & Margaret Gavin.  He graduated from All Hallows High School in Bronx, NY in 1955, earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1959 and then his MBA from Adelphi University in Garden City, NY.

Steve worked as an Aeronautical Engineer at Grumman Corporation for 42 years, working on a number of different projects over the years, including the Lunar Module (LEM) of the Apollo-13 and the Tomcat F-14 Fighter.  During his career Steve moved from New York to Calabasas, California where he raised his family, and then spent his very active retirement on Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

Steve dedicated a large portion of his life to public service, and used his expertise in various volunteer capabilities.  During his working years he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District.  In his retirement he spent 12 years on the Cape & Vineyard Energy Consortium (CVEC), was a docent at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, member of the Yarmouth Energy Committee, participated in archeological digs at Taylor-Bray Farm, and restored headstones at Ancient Cemetery for the Yarmouth Historical Society.   A lover of all things transportation, he was an avid classic car aficionado, helped build experimental aircraft, and was a member of the Cape and Islands Model Railroad Association.

As evidenced by Steve’s post-retirement activities, he loved meeting people and making new friends.  His varied interests in travel, cars, planes, model trains, gardening, home projects, and searching for treasures at yard sales brought him in touch with countless people over the years.   With each of those interactions Steve would invariably come away with a new piece of knowledge that he’d gleaned, and would then pass along to others.

To his family, he’ll be remembered for his kindness, thoughtfulness, helpfulness, and a love of ‘Dad Jokes’.  He had an innate ability to not only support his children’s and grandchildren’s interests, but to find the value and importance in those varied interests.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Annmarie; his sister, Ellen Broderick of Port Washington, NY; his children, Maggie Williams of Barnstable, MA, Liz Okun and her husband, Andy, of Austin, TX, Chris Gavin and his wife, Sandy, of Louisville, KY, and Steve Gavin and his wife, Lynette, of San Diego, CA; and his grandchildren, Macklin, Caroline, and Christian Williams; Haley and Gavin Okun; Quinlan Yocum and her husband, Jared, and Reagan Gavin; Beau, Hunter, and Maggie Gavin, along with many grand pets.

A private funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday April 15 and a live stream will be available at olvparish.org/livestream.  In lieu of flowers, contributions in remembrance of Steve’s life may be made to All Hallows High School, (www.allhallows.org), St. Francis Breadline (donate.stfrancisbreadline.org) or to a charity of one's choice.
